Introduction to Mountain Navigation One day course

Pre-course Information

  •  All courses are based in the Reading room at Coniston Institute, Yewdale Road, Coniston, Cumbria, LA21 4DU
  • ·Parking is available next door in the pay and display Bluebird Car Park, Yewdale Road, Coniston, LA21 8DU. There is sometimes at quitter times free roadside parking up the lane behind the Institute if you turn up by the Co-op. 
  • ·The session begins at 9am so please aim to arrive no later than 8.45am, refreshments are available on arrival
  •  We aim to finish the session about 5pm with a quick debrief following our afternoon on the hill


A rough plan for the day is as follows:

9am Welcome & Introduction

Navigation Equipment

Features on a map

10:30 Coffee break

10:45 Using a map and compass

Planning & Timing

Navigation strategies

12:00 Using technology

12:30 Lunch

1pm Practical session in the hills

5pm Return to base and debrief


Essential Equipment to bring on the day:

· Walking boots or fell/trail shoes if you are experienced in these

· Warm walking clothes with spare layers (we will be moving slowly on the hill as will be stopping to discuss navigation regularly-recommend fleece layers and insulated jacket)

· Waterproof trousers and jacket

·  A small day pack

· Hat and gloves

· Water bottle or hydration pack

· Compass- recommend Silva Explorer

· Any essential personal medication

· Suncream & sunhat in good weather

· Packed lunch and some snacks for on the hill

· Spare clothes to change into for the drive home

· Notebook and pen
